Following the end of Q1, Insolvency Insider has provided a detailed overview of the insolvency filings in Canada from the past quarter. We have summarized the most relevant information from the filings here for those who practice on the Commercial List.

Insolvency Insider provides the following analysis of the 51 insolvency filings highlighted in Q1 2021:

• Oil and gas led all industries with 8 filings mentioned, followed by construction with 6 filings and real estate and manufacturing with 5 filings each. 
• 24 filings mentioned were in Ontario, followed by 11 in Alberta and 7 in Quebec. 
• 11 CCAA filings were mentioned. EY and FTI had 2 appointments each as monitor and several other firms had one appointment each (Alvarez & Marsal, BDO, KSV, MNP, PwC, Grant Thornton/Raymond Chabot and SLF). 
• Stikeman Elliott was engaged as company counsel in 2 of these CCAA proceedings, followed by several other firms with one engagement each (Bennett Jones, BLG, Goodmans, McCarthy Tétrault, MLT Aikins, Aird & Berlis, Osler, TGF and Woods).
